1831(The second year of Tempo)

　On January the sixth, at the age of seventy-four,Ryokan left this world.A poet friend,Teishinni,

a woman priest who lived near him,watched.

　Ryokan composed a great many tanka and haiku, but this is the last haiku he said.

His favorite toy--a child's ball--lay at his bedside.
